Winnipeg to Saskatoon
Google says that its 782 Km and will take 8 hours and 5 minutes.
Well- it was a lonnnnnnggggg day of driving. Max describes the view as “long, boring and flat.” I thought it was beautiful, with the fields looking like a patch work quilt.
We didn’t meet too many people, and those we did talk with weren’t particularly friendly. By supper time Max was outdoing himself trying to create some goodwill with the waitress. When good manners and chatting wasn’t working he complemented her earrings, which only got him a curt thank you and then a long silence. It was after that that he noticed she was friendlier with those at the other tables so he said we need to try and seem like we are from Saskatoon and not out of towners. We weren’t very good at that so Max decided to distance himself and started calling us “Uncle Chris and Aunt Cathy.” Meanwhile, Chris was making subtle comments about the ambiance, including, “Max, you have to keep your voice down, especially when they aren’t playing any music” and when I asked him to pass me something he asked if I wanted it passed all the way back to the ’80’s (which is likely when the decorated the restaurant). I accused Chris of taking cheap shots at the place and he said “I haven’t even said anything about the art”, which was an eclectic collection, including a lot of chromatic Egyptian pieces, Victorian tea party pictures, and top hats and piano’s. I spent the meal quite entertained by Chris and Max, and we all left with tears in our eyes from laughing so much.
