Breakfast at the lodge was delicious (apple jack pancakes are so yummy) and the other fisher people seemed to have already developed a “plan for the day” on where they were going to fish. When we were asked what our plan was I said “we were thinking about fishing” and people looked a bit worried for us. So, we got some last minute advice from Eric and made a ‘plan for the day’. We picked up some minnows and very optimistically ordered a shore lunch. Feeling the pressure we got to the business of fishing. 1st catch goes to Chris, Max followed him with another great catch. Our 3rd fish of the day was too small to eat, but we had two big ones for lunch!
They have set up little campsites for shore lunch and we were very proud of ourselves when we found one. We docked the boat and started sorting out our lunch. The first obstacle was starting the fire. Yesterday, Ethan had a propane torch and we were given a book of matches. It has rained in the morning so most things on the island were wet. Chris worked his magic with shaved wood and got it started. We cheated a bit with a piece of paper towel dipped in the cooking oil. We put the potatoes on to start cooking and Chris and Max each cleaned a fish. We fried up the fish and the can of beans and had a feast!
After a quick tidy up we loaded in the boat. Unfortunately, it had drifted and got caught up on the rocks. No problem- we would just lift the motor. Hard to describe the next 30 minutes, but suffice to say we couldn’t figure out how to lift the motor. We also couldn’t figure out how to get off the rocks without damaging the propeller. At about the 25 minute mark Chris smashed the paddle about 6 times on the boat. He loses it so infrequently it was hard not to laugh. Eventually we weighed down the front of the boat to lift the back and sort of inched it out and got underway. Nothing was said for awhile after that and then Chris said “sorry for losing it” and Max and I burst out laughing at him, at length. We laughed again at supper when we told the story to our table mates. Yum Yum – turkey dinner!
After dinner Chris and Max went out fishing again, and I stayed behind to relax and read my book. I heard it was beautiful on the lake at night while the sunsets.
Donated to the lake: Rapella lure and 2 jig heads.
For those keeping track- Cathy has not yet caught a fish. 🙁
